2) VirtualDub : VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).  It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video.  It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.  VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects, so that you can compose your dream video sequence with ease everytime.Wax can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes – as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a “plug-in” to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors.

9) Movica : Movica is just a graphical user interface that uses some fine programs to edit movie files. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on keyboard shortcuts to make the job of editing easier. Basically, it is meant for editing the kind of movies that VirtualDub won’t. V-Dub is primarily an AVI editor, Movica will work on .wmv, .flv, .rm and .mpg files. This makes it more versatile than Virtualdub.

10) Video Spin : VideoSpin, free editor based on Studio, does a pretty darn good job compared with most free video tools. It doesn’t match the qualities of paid softwares but perform basic editing and output movies pretty easily.

11) AVIedit : It is a great tool to work with .AVI files. Regardless of small executable size, this avi editor offers you unlimited power of digital video processing. AVIedit allows you to join and split avi files, extract frames and do whatever you want… You can capture video by number of ways, including one-frame-per-minute (web camera) option, workaround annoying 2 Gb file size limit, send your videos to printer, heavy compress it and post to your webpage.

Besides the preview screen, the video you are working on is also represented clearly and graphically on a timeline and a tree-structure. Both of these fields are active and easy to work.

      Movie maker 2.6

      • AKS says:

Movie-Make only run with windows Vista, better try Ezvid, it is a decent video creation and editing tool.

        • Garyw1 says:

I totally Agree I use Ezvid for some of my Videos… I use Windows live for my Video Editor I just need a New one :P See I’m trying to make a Intro.

        • george says:

I agree with you but one thing that i don’t like on ezvid is the intro

          • sanjayreddy says:

can anyone says better than the one…..for editing

          • Debasish Ghosh says:

Ezvit does not allow multilingual text except only English. However, Windows Movie Maker does it nicely. But Windows Movie Maker does not provide any tool to compensate color or exposure which is required to be added in it.

          • Camokazee says:

This is how you can edit your Ezvid recordings and take out the intro:
            Go to Documents
            Click on the ezvid file
            Click on the projects file
There are some numbers, click on number one if you’ve recorded once. (Otherwise, you might have to search around for a little bit)
            Click on the file: Media
Go into the files and pick out the recording that you want. Then, save it on your USB or something and you can now edit it in Microsoft Movie Maker or any other software you have.

        • Janmark says:

If you like to slow the time or speed it up,
I would suggest using after effect,

and use it’s time remaping effect..

You can turn time slow or fast..

          • Debasish Ghosh says:

Is there any scope to compensate color and / or exposure in Windows Movie Maker?

        • Barnabus says:

This is possible in Windows LIVE Movie Maker.

        • Bera says:

Whatever you do, do not use Windows Movie maker. Blender’s video editor has slow-motion which you can easily keyframe (ramp).

    • Albert says:

Hello, can anyone help me choose the best editing software, what I have is some concert video taken with my Contour HD and the sound is crackly, first time using in a concert. I do commentaries for video games and machinimas so I would appreciate something like iMovie or something that could be easy to make cool edits with Video Games. The only problem is when I transfer my gameplay it’s a .avi and I need it to be a .mov for quicktime to read so I can import it to iMovie. If you can fix ANY of these problems for me or give me a recommendation I would very much appreciate it!

    • Gillman says:

      Trevor,
Go to the Apple store and look in free apps for SMART CONVERTER
It has a blue Icon with something like a film strip in it with right arrow in the middle.
It works so easy ,just drag your AVI movie into it and click convert and it will convert it and also show you where it has put it in your computer.

You also are able to select what conversion you want to go to eg: Windows .iphone and so on.

  35. lonetreelh says:

This is a great list! It’s amazing to see how many different interfaces there are — and some of them look so HARD to learn. I like Pixorial — pixorial.com — because you don’t need to download/install the software; it’s all cloud-based. It’s free, and it lets you add photos and pick from hundreds of songs, too. You can add titles, credits, transitions, etc. I don’t have the patience to learn a complicated program — this one’s just super easy.

  36. sites says:

Where is Lightworks? This list is lacking.

    • Sean says:

Thanks! I had never heard of Lightworks. Because of your reply, I checked them out.

      • Sal says:

So what’s ur take on light works. I just need a software to cut my videos short without changing the format. Is this feature available in light works?. The only editor that allows u to keep output format same as input is Imvideo editor too. But it’s not free.

        • svein g hansen says:

I belive you can do everything in Lightworks.
But this is propebly not the program you are looking for.
          From Wikipedia
Lightworks is a professional NLE system for editing and mastering of movies in 2K and 4K as well as television productions in PAL, NTSC and HD.
          Available for Windows, FREE.
Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy Award award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King’s Speech, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and The Departed, Mission Impossible, Pulp Fiction, Braveheart and Batman.

  57. rscoffey says:

I have used several of the programs listed above and as far as assembling clips into a video is concerned, they seem to do well. I am having a problem in that if I have a clip with with a section I want to remove, it seems that when I mark out the section to be removed, the programs clip the section and delete the balance of the video instead of removing the small clip, leaving the balance of the video intact.

I am willing to own up to it being “operator error”, but I can’t seem to find a help file that gives me instructions on any of the programs I’ve tried.

Hope I’ve made this clear, I worked on this all day yesterday and am a bit frustrated. Can anyone assist me?

I know what u are talking about. I suggest freemake video converter from freemake.com. It’s the best software I have come across. Not only that, it also have the option to join different clips into one. no catches and simple to use :) ))

  63. Devin says:

With all due respect, I am an “average home user” and Windows Live Movie Maker is quite possibly the worst piece of shit program I have ever used. There are barely any options, many file types not supported, no ability to blur faces or add aftereffects, and worst of all…

IT AUTOMATICALLY RESIZES ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS, PUTTING BLACK BARS ON EITHER SIDE AND AUTOMATICALLY LOWERING THE QUALITY. THIS CANNOT BE MITIGATED.

Take Windows Live Moviemaker out behind the barn and shoot it. Any of the other options on here are superior by orders of magnitude.

  75. Catherine says:

    Hi,
I’m trying to find a free editing program where I can seperate the audio from the video and then add an alternative video, or a cut away. So for interviews the image can show what the interviewer is talking about rather than just the person speaking e.g someone talking about water problems in their community and the video is showing the actual water source or problem. I find timelines easier to work so any suggested program would be greatly appreciated. I like Adobe Premier but I’m teaching 20 volunteers how to use it and can’t afford purchasing 20 licences.
Any help would be really greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

What is the best one to use when you wanna upload stuff like recorded footage from computer games using Fraps, or something like that?
Or will they all work for it?

I’m a future youtuber who needs a good free editing program. I want something that has some built in stock footage (idk the correct term) that you can add to a video such as making my house look like it’s exploding. Help!

all these are completely horrible, windows media anything won’t let you open up anything but avis and uncompressed files. And even if you convert your flv to avi it claims there’s a problem and won’t open. Virtual dub is the same b.s it won’t let you open anything but avis and mpegs and once again conversion DOES NOT WORK it still will claim there is a problem with file and won’t open. Wax is just old as hell. avidemux CLAIMS it’s simple but half the buttons you press say they aren’t available anymore.

All I want to do is cut this film a to replay some shots of a skateboard trick and nothing works. It’s super frustrating. Honestly AVS is the best editor out there unfortunately it adds a logo to every video so its worthless. But honestly if more editors had it set up like avs the world would be a better place. Even a child can get on avs and edit a film.

Zero stars for Windows Movie Maker. I did about 3 hours of editing–just cutting scenes and inserting titles on my old movies (avi files). Nothing fancy. Saved my project. Then started playing it to check it and got an error that “the file might be corrupted…” So everything I did was lost. The error message indicated that maybe I needed another codec (but it had worked perfectly before that) or that I had changed a file name (which I had not done). So I closed the file and re-opened the project and all I had was the titles. None of the scenes were there, just error messages. Will never use this program again.

    Why not try:

    Sony Vegas Pro
    Corel VideoStudio Pro X6
    Adobe Premiere Elements
    MAGIX Movie Edit Pro
    Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite
    Roxio Creator
    VideoPad
    AVS Video Editor
    Pinnacle Studio

Movie Maker is way out of the league with these softwares :)

    Hello,
I could use some advice. I am making an amateur documentary film on drug addicts and their addiction. We have used my photo cameras to make the footage, which I started to put together using a MacBook. Now I am going to finish off the project using my own PC. It is going to be a 15min long documentary with footage, and will include slides in black/white containing some text and I would like to add some music. Do you have any tips which software would be the most practical and easy for our project?
    Thank you.

Been using WMM (with rehan addons) for years and it does everything I want.. But I’ve lost its versatility due to the restraints of my laptop (basically I cant render a final vid in 720p (HD) in widescreen that youtube will accept)…

So I’m looking for a video editer that works exactly the same and renders a good quality video.

I’ve tried several free and pay for and they are either way to complicated (for what I need) or don’t do the simple basics that WMM does (Fade in and out on pictures/vids, watermarks etc)

What the hell can I use? :/

May I suggest three very good free video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable.

  92. Debasish Ghosh says:

Thank you CR. I’ll try all and give you my opinion.

    • Debasish Ghosh says:

      Dear CR,
I use Freemake and it’s very good for conversion and cutting but it does not have other options like Color and exposure correction, Audio and Text insertion etc. which are most essential to make a good Video. So I consider it as a very good Converter but not as an Editor. Tried FileLab but it’s not working in my system any way. I use Windows XP Professional SP3 with 1 GB RAM. Now I am trying VSDC seriously but facing trouble to find and use many controls as it does not provide tutorials. So, I’ll be glad if you kindly make a step-by-step tutorial for it.
      Thanks.
